I had my computer cleaned out due to a virus. I reinstalled Zune Marketplace, but when I hook up my Zune, it fails to recognize it. How do I get it to sync? And once I do, will I lose all the music on my Zune?

Go here for info on what to do when the computer/Zune program does not recognize your computer:

Once you resolve the problem you have a couple of choices once you update the firmware. You can either connect your Zune as a guest or you can connect it with the computer as the home computer. With the new firmware the option to choose what you will sync does work-at least on Vista it does, I don’t know about on XP. It will only clear it out if you sync before moving the files on the Zune back to your collection.

I set up my Zune on my new laptop recently. It downloaded the new firmware and then updated it on my device. I connected the Zune to the home computer not as a guest. I followed the onscreen commands and I told the software that I would set up the monitored folders later. I did this on purpose as I wanted to find out if my stuff would get deleted from my Zune. It did not delete the stuff from my device since I told it I would set up monitored folders later. Instead it went straight to the collection and told me there was nothing in there. All of my Zune files are on an external drive so I had them backed up even if the program had deleted them. When I added the monitored folders everything got resynced as though nothing had been on the Zune.

If you are still concerned that it will delete your stuff then connect a guest. Then open the program and click on device. Then copy your stuff to your collection.

If you go the other route then still click on device and copy what is there to your collection.

Consider getting an external drive. You can put all of your Zune stuff there. Then should you have other problems with your computer you will still have your files. I have one and have not regretted buying it.

Sorry if this is a little long winded. I hope it helps you out.
